We have all been working very hard today at the practice, as we are all finishing at lunchtime to go off on our Christmas do!! Yes thats right, Christmas party in February. As Sarah and Nick were in Oz and Steph in NZ, we all decided to wait for the new year to have a team building get together. We are off to have some lunch and possible indulge in a few cheeky glasses of wine. Of course, we will all be on our best behaviour (we are on brand you know) and all back to the grind stone tomorrow.

Christmas Do (just a little bit late)
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010Crash Helmet
Tuesday, February 9th, 2010Another busy day at the office! Me and Sen have been treating a lovely lady from Pangbourne today who decided to have a porcelain bonded crown made for one of her teeth. She originally saw us as she had fractured a back tooth. The tooth was made up of an old amalgam filling, and gave up the ghost when she was eating (the usual suspects are french bread and nuts). She decided to go ahead with having a custom made crown, as this would protect the tooth much better. Think of it as a little crash helmet for your tooth. Sen took photos using the intra-oral camera to show her the condition of the tooth, took impressions, prepared the tooth and the models were sent off to the lab. She will be coming back to see us in 2 weeks to have the crown permently fitted. She did really well today. She was here for an hour and a half, but we did give her 10 minutes down time as she was starting to get tired.
If you have any questions regarding crowns and crown work then please feel free to contact your dentist. We want to kepp you all smiling
Implant Marathon
Friday, February 5th, 20107.30am start for me and Steph today! It is a busy day at Woodborough House. Nick was seeing one of his patients for some extensive implant treatment. This lady is having 10 dental implants placed today. She has been having trouble with her dentures for years, so she has decided to do something about it. In order to make her dentures more stable, easier to eat, her speech improved, and a better quality of life she is having implants placed to help secure her dentures. Think of it as lego (but without the multicolour blocks and lego men)! Dental implants are placed into the bone, using guided surgery equipment to ensure the procedure is completely accurate and the position of the implants are in the correct place. New dentures are then made, which will inter-lock with the implants when in the patients mouth. Those baby’s won’t budge!!! The implants ensure great ancorage of the dentures, making them more stable for the patient. It will make eating easier, speech improved and the patient will hardly know they are wearing dentures. Many patients who have this treatment ask themselves “why didn’t I do this sooner?” The patient also had the advantage of having IV sedation with Donny. This is a great bonus, as time goes by very quickly and Donny can provide antibiotics to help the healing process and time.
If you are fed up of loose dentures, and feel you need something more stable, then feel free to ask one of our Team about dental implants. We can provide you with some information and discuss the treatment for you. You can also check out the links on the website, for some night time reading. We all know our patient will be smiling with her new dental implants.
Wibbly Wobbly
Thursday, February 4th, 2010Sarah and Laura sorted out one man’s problem today…………………….his wobbly tooth. He is a regular attender at the practice, and for some time this tooth has been giving him grief!! The patient finds cleaning his back teeth extremely difficult, as his manual dexterity is limited. The tooth was also causing him discomfort in his bite. It was just getting in the way! Sarah advised using an electric toothbrush as this makes cleaning those hard to reach areas easier. Due to bone loss around the tooth, the tooth eventually became so mobile that the patient decided to have the tooth extracted. Now, many of you may know, that Sarah does not like extractions one little bit! But, despite this, in order to make sure this patient was comfortable she went ahead with the task. There was smiles, from both, when they came downstairs, so all went well. He may be one tooth down but he still gave thumbs up
It’s a makeover!
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010We have all been shifting desks, and moving paper work, as today is the start of the office makeover!! We are redecorating and reorganising our office space to make way for a new patient lounge area. This area will be used for patients that want to come in to discuss any treatment with our patient co-ordinators Cathy and Hayley C. We can show our patients past cases and photographs aswell as explain procedures in more detail. It will also be used as an area for our patients to chill out when having oral sedation (we dont want to make you feel embarressed after having a sip of our happy juice). It will be a great place for you to sit down with our practice manager Hayley to discuss any finance issues or costs of treatments, as it will be more private and confidential for both parties.
We are all looking forward to the launch of the new “patient lounge area”. I don’t think my idea of pink walls has been noted, but all the same it will be a great place for our patients to sit, relax, enjoy a coffee and talk to our team. Just another way WH wants to make your dental experience the best it can be.
Trouble sleeping?
Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010Many of us don’t want to admit to it, but snoring can cause some people serious distress and problems in life. Sen saw a lovely lady today, who explained to us that she has recently been tested for Diabetes. She had been suffering from extreme exhaustion, tiredness, and too much sleep just isn’t enough. Sen had just recently been to lectures and studied sleeping disorders, anti-snoring devices and sleep apnea. Snoring plays a major role in sleep apnea and we have decided to try and help. We have suggested that she tries wearing an anti-snoring device at night. Snoring occurs when the soft tissue at the back of the throat vibrates when you breathe while you sleep. The mouth guard gently pushes your lower jaw forward to stretch the soft tissue, thus reducing snoring. This could help this lady in a big way! We are also referring her to a respiratory clinic at a hospital.
If you have similar symptoms, or think that you may benefit from wearing an anti-snoring device, please call the practice and speak to one of our patient co-ordinators. Our dentists here would be more than happy to make you one. We want to keep you smiling .
Bye bye baby tooth!
Monday, February 1st, 2010Its the start of a new week at WH, and already Nick and Steph are seeing a new patient. She was recommended to us from a friend, and we were happy to see her for a consultation regarding replacing a tooth. Aged 45, this lovely lady still has hold of her baby tooth( they can be stubborn little things). Worried that the tooth may eventually have to be removed, and also for cosmetic reasons, she was particularly interested in finding out and discussing the option of having a Dental Implant to fill the gap. Nick and Steph took the time to discuss the advantages of having a dental implant, presented photos from other cases Nick has worked on, explained how long this type of treatment will take to complete, and talked about the procedure itself. She has decided that this treatment will be the best for her, and has already booked herself in to get started!! We will enjoy treating her and caring for her on her Implant journey!!
There is always a lot to take on board, when discussing Implants, and we have many fully trained and experienced staff around to help answer your questions or queries if you feel you have misunderstood or need something explained in more detail. We want to do all we can to keep you smiling
