A pain in the head

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Wisdom Teeth………… for some of us they cause us no problems at all, for others they can be a real pain in the head (sorry. I had to get a joke in some where). I know, like many people, how painful and uncomfortable wisdom teeth can be if they become inflamed and infected. My advice to any one suffering with sore wisdom teeth…… get it looked at straight away! I had a lower wisdom tooth which was impacted against my other molar tooth and all it gave me was problems. There was absolutely no way I could keep it as clean as possible, and eventually it became infected. I felt so ill. It was a case of extraction. Nick dealt with it swiftly, and after a couple of days, I felt back to normal. The thought of having a tooth out, admittedly did not fill me with joy, but it was much better than having infection in my mouth and I felt heaps better.

If you are suffering from wisdom tooth pain or would like advice then speak with your dentist. We want to make sure all our patients are healthy ;-)

Food Trap

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Today seems to be the day when every patient we see are suffering from the same problem………….food traps. We all know how annoying it is when food always gets trapped in the same place every time we eat. Whether it is between a filling and a tooth, by a crown, bridge or even just between two teeth, this area will be a great hang out place for the plaque and bacteria that can cause tooth decay and gum problems. The particular patients we saw today with food traps, had existing fillings which did not have great margins around them. The fillings needed to be adjusted so the space between the two teeth had just enough space to get a piece of floss between (and we all know you should be flossing daily). Hopefully these areas will not be a problem for them anymore.

If you are suffering with problems from existing fillings, or areas where food traps, then please talk to your dentist. They will be able to fix that problem for you

Later Evenings just for you

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Today was the launch day of our later evening. As mentioned in a previous blog, we will be doing a late evening, until 8pm, on the last Thursday of every month. I am pleased to say that today’s evening has been a success! We decided, as a practice, that opening for longer will be beneficial for our patients as it makes coming here a little easier. Getting time off work, and fitting in dental appointments around the school run is always tricky, so we hope that this small change will keep all our patients happy and attending the dentist regularly. We have been busy seeing children for their routine check ups, tooth aches, and patients having fillings. We also have had our Hygienist Helen working her magic.I must say, it is very strange being here at this time of the day, seeing as I’m usually watching Eastenders right now :-)

If you are interested in seeing your dentist or hygienist later in the day, please contact our reception team. They will be more than willing to help

Scrub, scrub away

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

After writing on our blog last week about tooth erosion, today we have been bombarded with patients suffering from tooth abrasion. The culprit for these small lesions are………….the humble toothbrush. We all like to give our teeth a good old scrub morning, noon and night, but this simple action with the toothbrush can cause the enamel on our teeth to wear away. The areas that are mainly affected by this action, is the neck of the tooth. This areas can be filled by the dentist using a white composite filling, but I can give you some simple tips to help stop this…..

Using a soft toothbrush is the first way of tackling the problem. The bristles on a toothbrush can be very hard on some toothbrushes and this can cause a great deal of damage to the tooth surface. For some patients, using an electric toothbrush is ideal, as you can let the brush do the work. The Phillips Sonicare range is great as the sonic action uses less of a “scrubbing” action. Another tip for you, when brushing, is to hold your toothbrush with just your thumb and index finger. This means you are not holding the toothbrush firmly, making the scrubbing action less hard and less forceful. A simple post it note on the bathroom mirror saying “Remember not to scrub!” can also encourage you to change habits, and the way you brush your teeth.

If you have any questions regarding tooth abrasion, or you would like any more advice on the matter, speak with our dentists, hygienists and nurses. They will be more than willing to help you

Brighten up your day

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

As the weather is gloomy and we all like a little something to brighten our day, here at WH we are running a special offer on our tooth whitening treatments. Until the end of April there will be £100 discount on the treatments. The home kit and the in house whitening will be available to you at a fantastic price of £299.

Here is a break down of the difference between both treatments………

The home kit involves us taking some impressions of your teeth. These impressions are then sent of to a laboratory and 2 weeks later we have the bleaching trays made to fit your mouth and teeth. They are soft clear trays and will hold the bleaching solution against the tooth surface. The treatment works better if you wear the trays at night, while sleeping, but if you find this difficult, you can wear them during the day.My mum wears them while shes doing the house work! The in house whitening treatment involves you sitting in surgery with a bleach solution on your teeth while a special light shines on them in order to activate the solution. It takes about an hour, and you do get better results if you incorporate this with home bleaching as well.

Tooth whitening is very safe, and is a great way of making yourself feel good. If you have any questions regarding tooth whitening feel free to ask any of the staff at Woodborough House . We have all done it here :-)

Acid Attack!

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

We have a poorly nurse in the building today. Our very own Steph is complaining (sorry I mean airing her views) about erosion on her teeth. Erosion is usually seen on the inside surfaces of our front teeth. There are several different factors that contribute towards tooth erosion, and I definately know what is causing Stephs……………………. Fizzy pop!! Erosion is almost always associated with high acidity. Watching what we eat and drink can help reduce tooth erosion dramatically. Often, frequent sipping of carbonated drinks or regular consumption of citrus fruits/drinks can cause tooth loss. Another factor is acid reflux. Regurgitation of stomach acids can cause the tooth to wear, sometimes without the patient being very aware of it. The features of tooth erosion can be a smooth, polished appearance to the tooth, or the shape of the tooth is lost or shallow depressions appear.

We are all guilty of “grazing” on our can of fizzy drink at our desks, and children and teenagers are especially prone to sipping on the fizzy stuff, so please be aware of what you, friends and family are doing simply from drinking. If you can’t break the habit or change routines, good old H2o is great for rinsing out after consuming acidic or fizzy food/drinks. The water helps neutralise the mouth. Sugar free gum is also great for this.

If you want to discuss Tooth erosion with your dentist, Hygienist or one of our nurses then just ask! We are here to help ;-)

Toothbrush Demo

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Today in our lunch hour, we had a rep from Phillips visit us to talk to us about the Sonicare toothbrush range. We like to keep “in the know” at WH so having these regular Continued  Professional Development meetings help us keep on track. As professionals, we have to do these CPD hours in order to stay registered with the General Dental Council. There has been a few re-vamps of the Sonicare toothbrush over the years, and although they are more expensive than the other electric toothbrushes on the market, they are definitely worth their weight in gold! I’ve got one, and I wouldn’t be with out it now. There is also a kids range, which is great for those children who are not brushing as they should. It even plays musical notes (its a shame the adult version doesn’as well). The Sonicare toothbrushes are great for those patients with implants, braces, or if they find brushing with a manual toothbrush hard. They are great for those patients who tend to brush hard, as you let the toothbrush do the work. They are also clinically provine to make you teeth whitee. Big wow!!

We have got demo toothbrushes and leaflets if you are interested in them, so please feel free to ask about them. We want to do all we can to keep you smiling.

Going that extra mile

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

We have an important announcement to make! Our opening hours will be changing. After a lot of blood, sweat and tears, we have worked out a way to make visiting the practice a lot easier. As of April, we will be making some slight changes to our opening hours. We will be here for longer hours, making it easier for our patients to get an appointment with us. We all know how hard it is to escape work, or to fit your dental appointments around the school run, or kids activities, so here at WH we will opening until 6pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. We will also have a later evening on a Thursday where we will be open until 8pm, with both a Dentist and Hygienist available for you.

In order to go that extra mile, and to be a cut above the rest, we feel it is necessary and important to make these small changes in order to cater for our patients needs and expectations. We want to keep you all happy with the service you are receiving from WH and most importantly….we want to keep you smiling. Nobody likes change, but we think you will all be happy with this one.

If you are interested in later dental appointments then please make the reception team aware, and we can aim to book appointments at a time that is convenient for you. We appreciate all feedback, both positive and negative, so please let us know your views and opinions.

Going ga ga!

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Today all the girls were going “ga ga” for our tiny visitor.L’ren, one of our hygienists, came in to see us along with her baby girl. She was very cute! We all had a cuddle. Many of L’rens patients were sad to see her leave last year, especially as she had to leave for maternity leave earlier than planned. Even though she is busy with her two little rascals, she is coming back to Woodborough House to do a day of Hygiene. She will be back in the summer, but the day she will be working has not yet been confirmed. I will keep you all in suspense, and let you know as soon as we do.

If you would like to book a hygiene appointment or would like to know anything about our hygiene appointments here at WH, then please speak to a member of our team.

The good old days

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Many of our patients will remember the days before Sarah and Nick, when they came to visit the previous owner of the practice. We have heard many stories from patients of the “good old days” when he was practicing here, getting them in “the head-lock” and smudging the ladies lipstick. He has a big fan base and they all still talk about him.Well, today, Nick and Steph have been treating his lovely wife. Even for her dental appointments she manages to look super glam and gorgeous! It’s always great to see our friends in for treatment, and it is especially important to us that professionals trust and recommend Nick. Nick and Steph have been working their magic, taking photo’s, and carrying out advanced dentistry, giving the patient the smile and comfort they require. We all want to keep you smiling :-)
