Today the girls had a lunch and learn session with our Oral B rep’s. We usually have regular sessions with them, in order to keep up to date with the latest and greatest tools and toys supplied by them. Oral B wanted to promote their electric toothbrushes today. Electric toothbrushes are great for patients who want to improve their oral health. They help with removing plaque in hard to reach places, tackle areas interproximally, reduce staining, and give a through clean. they are great for patients with implants, and also fab for cleaning removable retainers (I use mine all the time for that). But an electric toothbrush is no substitute for flossing or seeing your hygienist! If you are interested in investing in an electric toothbrush, or you want to discuss which type would be beneficial to you, talk to our team. I know how daunting it is when you walk in to the chemist or supermarket and you are presented with rows upon rows of toothbrushes, with added extras, bells and whistles. All you want is one that will do the job! Talk to us and we can help

Lunch and Learn
Tuesday, May 4th, 2010A new arrival with a small problem
Thursday, April 22nd, 20102 weeks ago I became a very proud aunt to my little nephew Olly. Yesterday I went to see him, and unfortunately the poor little devil is suffering with oral thrush. Luckily my sister had a geek like me around to fill her in on all the details about the the signs and symptoms. Oral thrush is a fungal infection that particularly affects young babies, older patients and the terminally ill in particular. The clinical features include thick, white patches (like curds) on the tongue, cheeks, lips and palate. It is treated using anti fungal drugs (either in a oral suspension or pastilles). It was fun trying to feed a 2 week year old medication that smelt like marzipan! The faces he pulled was hilarious, but it will clear up in no time with the drops he is taking. Lets hope he gets better very soon, and my sister gets a better nights sleep.
The Big Debate
Friday, April 16th, 2010As we are all currently being bombarded by talk about the current elections and the “big debate”, as dental professionals we quite often have debates of our own with our patients. The subject being………..fluoride. Unfortunately, like many areas in the country, Berkshire does not have fluoride in the water supply. This can cause many problems for our children, and ourselves. We need small doses in our water, toothpaste and mouthwashes to help combat tooth decay. It has been highlighted recently in the media, that children of this generation suffer severely from premature tooth loss. Obviously sugar, sweets and diet plays a major role in whether children develop tooth decay or not, but with small amounts of fluoride introduced, this could help prevent early decay. Please obtain advice from dental professionals about fluoride and which toothpastes/mouthwashes are best for your children, as too much fluoride can can cause fluorosis (brown mottling of the teeth) and may be harmful in excessive amounts. As a dental nurse, it is sad too see children having fillings at such a young age, and especially telling mum and dad that they need teeth removed. We want to do all we can for them, and ourselves, to help combat tooth decay and tooth loss.
Getting our children into the habit of brushing teeth, avoiding sugary foods and sweets, and visting the dentist is just one of the ways we can educate them. I may not be the next David Cameron and I may not be best candidate for running the country, but I can say that we need to change the way we think about our childrens dental health. We need to stop and think in regards to feeding our children those fizzy pops and bribing them with a packet of sweets.
If you would like any advice about diet, flouride and tooth decay please talk to our dental professionals. We can help
Acid Attack!
Thursday, March 18th, 2010We have a poorly nurse in the building today. Our very own Steph is complaining (sorry I mean airing her views) about erosion on her teeth. Erosion is usually seen on the inside surfaces of our front teeth. There are several different factors that contribute towards tooth erosion, and I definately know what is causing Stephs……………………. Fizzy pop!! Erosion is almost always associated with high acidity. Watching what we eat and drink can help reduce tooth erosion dramatically. Often, frequent sipping of carbonated drinks or regular consumption of citrus fruits/drinks can cause tooth loss. Another factor is acid reflux. Regurgitation of stomach acids can cause the tooth to wear, sometimes without the patient being very aware of it. The features of tooth erosion can be a smooth, polished appearance to the tooth, or the shape of the tooth is lost or shallow depressions appear.
We are all guilty of “grazing” on our can of fizzy drink at our desks, and children and teenagers are especially prone to sipping on the fizzy stuff, so please be aware of what you, friends and family are doing simply from drinking. If you can’t break the habit or change routines, good old H2o is great for rinsing out after consuming acidic or fizzy food/drinks. The water helps neutralise the mouth. Sugar free gum is also great for this.
If you want to discuss Tooth erosion with your dentist, Hygienist or one of our nurses then just ask! We are here to help
All tied up
Thursday, February 18th, 2010Firstly, I want to start the blog by saying a big “ahhhhhhhhhhh” for our Laura. She was merrily on her way to work this morning, when her cursed car broke down on her! She didn’t make it to WH and had to walk all the way home in the pouring rain (as well as being 5 months pregnant). We hope she isn’t feeling too washed out (hee hee excuse the pun) and she makes it to us tomorrow.
Also, me and and Sarah saw a lovely new patient from Purley-on-Thames today, who came sporting a kiwi tie, just for Sarah. He is a big fan of NZ and told us he thought it was appropriate to wear it to his dental examination. He did cheer us up after a very busy morning. We hope he comes back to see us wearing it. It definitely kept us smiling
The luck of the Irish……..or not
Saturday, February 13th, 2010The luck of the Irish definately was not looming on the Woodborough House team, as our Euro Lottery numbers did not come up on our syndicate. I really thought it was our turn! Of course, we would have spent our money wisely if we had won……….. I mean, a walk-in wardrobe is not a lot to ask for!!
Anyway, we shall get back to it. Our day is full of dental exams and tooth ache appointments. With half term approaching, we will be sure to have a busy week next week. If your kids are due their dental check ups, then call our reception team to book an appointment. We want to keep those kids healthy and smiling
Christmas Do (just a little bit late)
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010We have all been working very hard today at the practice, as we are all finishing at lunchtime to go off on our Christmas do!! Yes thats right, Christmas party in February. As Sarah and Nick were in Oz and Steph in NZ, we all decided to wait for the new year to have a team building get together. We are off to have some lunch and possible indulge in a few cheeky glasses of wine. Of course, we will all be on our best behaviour (we are on brand you know) and all back to the grind stone tomorrow.
Crash Helmet
Tuesday, February 9th, 2010Another busy day at the office! Me and Sen have been treating a lovely lady from Pangbourne today who decided to have a porcelain bonded crown made for one of her teeth. She originally saw us as she had fractured a back tooth. The tooth was made up of an old amalgam filling, and gave up the ghost when she was eating (the usual suspects are french bread and nuts). She decided to go ahead with having a custom made crown, as this would protect the tooth much better. Think of it as a little crash helmet for your tooth. Sen took photos using the intra-oral camera to show her the condition of the tooth, took impressions, prepared the tooth and the models were sent off to the lab. She will be coming back to see us in 2 weeks to have the crown permently fitted. She did really well today. She was here for an hour and a half, but we did give her 10 minutes down time as she was starting to get tired.
If you have any questions regarding crowns and crown work then please feel free to contact your dentist. We want to kepp you all smiling
It’s a makeover!
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010We have all been shifting desks, and moving paper work, as today is the start of the office makeover!! We are redecorating and reorganising our office space to make way for a new patient lounge area. This area will be used for patients that want to come in to discuss any treatment with our patient co-ordinators Cathy and Hayley C. We can show our patients past cases and photographs aswell as explain procedures in more detail. It will also be used as an area for our patients to chill out when having oral sedation (we dont want to make you feel embarressed after having a sip of our happy juice). It will be a great place for you to sit down with our practice manager Hayley to discuss any finance issues or costs of treatments, as it will be more private and confidential for both parties.
We are all looking forward to the launch of the new “patient lounge area”. I don’t think my idea of pink walls has been noted, but all the same it will be a great place for our patients to sit, relax, enjoy a coffee and talk to our team. Just another way WH wants to make your dental experience the best it can be.
Trouble sleeping?
Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010Many of us don’t want to admit to it, but snoring can cause some people serious distress and problems in life. Sen saw a lovely lady today, who explained to us that she has recently been tested for Diabetes. She had been suffering from extreme exhaustion, tiredness, and too much sleep just isn’t enough. Sen had just recently been to lectures and studied sleeping disorders, anti-snoring devices and sleep apnea. Snoring plays a major role in sleep apnea and we have decided to try and help. We have suggested that she tries wearing an anti-snoring device at night. Snoring occurs when the soft tissue at the back of the throat vibrates when you breathe while you sleep. The mouth guard gently pushes your lower jaw forward to stretch the soft tissue, thus reducing snoring. This could help this lady in a big way! We are also referring her to a respiratory clinic at a hospital.
If you have similar symptoms, or think that you may benefit from wearing an anti-snoring device, please call the practice and speak to one of our patient co-ordinators. Our dentists here would be more than happy to make you one. We want to keep you smiling .
