The reality, of course, is that even snoring is a loud, clear signal that the airflow is impaired while the person sleeps. In the case of sleep apnoea, breathing actually stops for periods of at least 10 seconds per event -- with stoppages of up to 2 minutes being recorded. In severe cases of apnoea, the sufferer may stop breathing 30 or more times per hour. It's therefore not surprising that 'sleep disordered breathing' is linked to a wide range of serious consequences, including stroke, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, impotence, retarded metabolism and consequent morbidity, plus much more.
