One of the big problems, that we quite often see at WH, is patients suffering from decay on root surfaces. We saw one of our lovely patients today, who had this exact problem. The roots of our teeth are more susceptible to decay, as the root surface is much more softer than the enamel covering our teeth. As we age, (and that’s the one thing we all have in common) our gums may start to receed slightly. As the root of the tooth is exposed, plaque and tartar are much more likely to stick to this surface of the tooth. Without regular Hygiene appointments, this plaque and bacteria is hard to remove. Eventually this causes tooth decay. After cleaning the tooth surface, we managed to apply a filling material which releases fluoride. Fluoride is great for our little knashers, and will help reduce the rate of decay in our mouths. He left happy, but only agreed to come back for his dental exam if we agreed to run for his charity. 10k!! We might have to start training for next year.
If you have similar problems, or would like to speak to one of our dentists or hygienist about flouride then please let us know. We want to keep hold of tose pearly whites.

We are all feeling the pinch at the moment, and fixing our teeth may not be the top of our agenda’s, but here at Woodborough House we want to suggest a way to help make things a little easier. We are running a scheme at the practice called Denplan Essentials. It is the Uk’s leading provider of preventive dental care programmes, and it enables you to pay a monthly fee to cover the cost of your dental examinations, X-rays, Hygiene care and then you receive a 10% discount on any treatment you may need (ie. fillings). It has some great benefits including emergency care if you are abroad, away from home, away on business or on holiday. As part of the Insurance services you will also have access to the 24 hour Denplan emergency helpline, in order to find a practicing Denplan dentist. Another great advantage of this cover is, by paying an additional £1.95 a month, you can upgrade to Implant Cover. This will cover £2,100 per dental implant fixture following a dental injury and a maximum cover of up to £20,000 per incident! Thats an amazing bargin if you ask me. We have leaflets at reception if you want to read up on it.
Woodborough House are offering our patients a free check up if they sign up on the day of your appointment for Denplan Essentials. If you have any other questions regarding Denplan then ring the practice and ask to speak to our practice manager Hayley or our receptionist Sarah. They know all about it.

After a football update and gossip, me and Sen continued our hard work deep scaling and root planing one of our patients we have been seeing for several weeks now. He is a smoker, and his oral health was not the best when we first saw him. He was suffering from gum disease, and his cleaning was not as thorough as it could be (mainly because he has never been taught or shown how to clean and floss properly). Sen gave him some tips and hints in regards to flossing, brushing, and interdental cleaning for when he was at home, and after a few weeks we really did see the diffrence. He has been doing a fantastic job at home, and he is now really motivated about keeping his teeth and gums healthy. We look forward to seeing him again for more football chat and progress.
If you have any queries regarding gum disease, or would like to visit one of our hygienists for oral health education, then please contact us at the practice. We want to keep you smiling

Today Lama has been working her perio magic at WH! We have seen several new patients today, referred to us from other dental practices around the Berkshire area. Lama has been reviewing their periodontal status, taking radiographs, and discussing the extent of gum disease in the mouth. Periodontal disease effects the underlieing tissues and bone in the mouth. When plaque is left around the teeth and the gum margin, it releases toxins, which in turn causes gingivitis. If this is left untreated, it will progress to Periodontal disease. The signs of this disease are mobile teeth, bone loss, drifting teeth and eventually loss of teeth. When reviewing her patients Lama measures the pocket depths of the gum each side of the teeth, takes Xrays to examine any bone loss and explains throughly the extent of the disease and how she can treat it. She may be a little lady but she sure knows how to fight that plaque and disease away!
If you have any questions regarding Gingivitis or Periodontal Disease, then speak to one of our dentist. they will be happy to help.

Nae was busy today, with a patient who has decided to have her teeth whitened and also to replace some old fillings. As the patient wanted white composite fillings we decided that it was best that the patient did a couple of weeks of home whitening before changing the old fillings. This enables Nae to pick the correct shade for the new fillings, as her patient will then have lovely bright white teeth. Nae explained how the whitening treatment works, and explained what the patient needs to do at home. We advised the patient to try and avoid food and drinks that are likely to stain(ie: black coffee, red wine, curry and beetroot). Teeth are more porous during the period that you bleach, so the teeth are more likely to pick up stains. Nothing a good polish with our Hygienist won’t fix though! We even had time to catch up on the latest Eastenders gossip. Nae was really behind with the times! We are looking forward to seeing the results in a couple of weeks (and the continuing chaos of Albert Square)
If you are interested in whitening your teeth, then ask our reception team or your dentist. We have all done it at WH, so have a look at our pearly whites when you are next in.

Its all change here on a Monday here at WoodboroughHouse in regards to your hygiene appointments. Katie has been with us now, on a Monday, for several months but due to other work commitments she has had to leave us on a Monday. But don’t despair…………. she will still be here but on a Saturday. It won’t be every Saturday but it will be at least once a month. It may be an idea, when you come for your hygiene appointment with her, to book ahead in advance. That way you are guaranteed to see her,and also there is no chance of you forgetting to book (we all know hygiene appointments are not at the top of our list of things to do on a Saturday). Here at WH, we understand that many people do not like change, and that when you find someone you like and trust, you like to stick by that. We will do all we can to accommodate your needs, so please let us know if there is anything we can do to help. We want to keep you all smiling.

Firstly, I want to start the blog by saying a big “ahhhhhhhhhhh” for our Laura. She was merrily on her way to work this morning, when her cursed car broke down on her! She didn’t make it to WH and had to walk all the way home in the pouring rain (as well as being 5 months pregnant). We hope she isn’t feeling too washed out (hee hee excuse the pun) and she makes it to us tomorrow.
Also, me and and Sarah saw a lovely new patient from Purley-on-Thames today, who came sporting a kiwi tie, just for Sarah. He is a big fan of NZ and told us he thought it was appropriate to wear it to his dental examination. He did cheer us up after a very busy morning. We hope he comes back to see us wearing it. It definitely kept us smiling

Sarah and Laura sorted out one man’s problem today…………………….his wobbly tooth. He is a regular attender at the practice, and for some time this tooth has been giving him grief!! The patient finds cleaning his back teeth extremely difficult, as his manual dexterity is limited. The tooth was also causing him discomfort in his bite. It was just getting in the way! Sarah advised using an electric toothbrush as this makes cleaning those hard to reach areas easier. Due to bone loss around the tooth, the tooth eventually became so mobile that the patient decided to have the tooth extracted. Now, many of you may know, that Sarah does not like extractions one little bit! But, despite this, in order to make sure this patient was comfortable she went ahead with the task. There was smiles, from both, when they came downstairs, so all went well. He may be one tooth down but he still gave thumbs up

We reframed from pulling our hair out this morning, after seeing a class from Pangbourne Primary School. They are currently learning about teeth and the dentist, so the school approached us about teaching them for the morning. We all rallied together, put on a show, and gave the kiddies healthy treats and goodie bags. It was tough, but we all managed (even Sen pulled out the stops!)
We taught them oral hygiene, how to brush their teeth correctly, why they have to visit the dentist regularly, and healthy diet. We hope they all enjoyed themselves, and now have plenty to talk and write about for their school projects

My brain hurts and my fingers are tired today! I have been busy putting together a patient survey for our new and existing patients, to help us understand your expectations and general overview of Woodborough House. We shall be asking you to fill them out, anonymously, some time soon. The survey has been conducted to help us make visiting Woodborough House a pleasurable experience. It will include questions ranging from the thoroughness and advice given by the dentist, to the reading material in our waiting room.
We are always looking for feedback, both positive a negative, so please let us know what you think of your visit and time here at the practice. Customer Care and satisfaction is very important to us, and it is our aim to ensure we are the primary choice for excellent dental treatment and care. We want to keep you smiling.
