Phew. Busy day at WH today! Nick and Steph have been in surgery placing a dental implant for one of our dear patients. The patient has had one before, and swears by it! She had to have a tooth extracted, and to replace the space she decided to invest in another implant. The case was a complex one, as Nick had to do a bone graft. With the use of CT Scans and radiographs Nick is able to place the implant in exactly the correct position. It was a busy few hours, but the time flew for our patient as she had some of our oral sedation (and my IPod). We look forward to seeing the end result.
Well I am off now to enjoy the weekend. I will be back next week for more blogging. Hope you aren’t getting bored of my ranting yet. The stories will continue……

So its the big night tonight! Who will be winning your votes? I have been talking to all our patients regarding the election, trying to find out who they are voting for, and I am still not sure. I suppose I need to decide by the end of the day. I will be told off by some very passionate patients if I don’t! Can they change the state of the economy? Will they sort out all of our countries problems? I don’t know.
I tell you one thing that has got my vote at the moment (excuse my very cheesy link) is our home bleaching kit. We have had a few patients in recently for their review appointments, after going off with their bleach trays and kits, and the results have been amazing!! Its such a great thing to do to lift yourself, and all our patients just won’t stop smiling because of it. We have even had a few of our more mature patients treating themselves to whitening too, and have been so glad that went ahead with the treatment. Our home whitening kit involves you coming into the surgery so your dentist can check if you will be a good candidate for the whitening (we need to check for crowns and fillings as they will not change colour). You have impressions taken of your upper and lower teeth, these are then sent of to a lab where they make your bespoke bleach trays made, and then 2 weeks later you come and pick them up. Its very easy to do, and the girls here are always a phone call away whenever you need any advice or help. We have all done it. As Sarah said to me when I first started “we must whitening your minging teeth”. Thanks Sarah! Well now I have a nice bright smile
If you are interested in home whitening, then please talk to your dentist or a member of our team.

Today the girls had a lunch and learn session with our Oral B rep’s. We usually have regular sessions with them, in order to keep up to date with the latest and greatest tools and toys supplied by them. Oral B wanted to promote their electric toothbrushes today. Electric toothbrushes are great for patients who want to improve their oral health. They help with removing plaque in hard to reach places, tackle areas interproximally, reduce staining, and give a through clean. they are great for patients with implants, and also fab for cleaning removable retainers (I use mine all the time for that). But an electric toothbrush is no substitute for flossing or seeing your hygienist! If you are interested in investing in an electric toothbrush, or you want to discuss which type would be beneficial to you, talk to our team. I know how daunting it is when you walk in to the chemist or supermarket and you are presented with rows upon rows of toothbrushes, with added extras, bells and whistles. All you want is one that will do the job! Talk to us and we can help

We are all sad in the practice today as we will be waving goodbye to our nurse Laura. She is off to have a baby!!! You may have read my previous blog announcing she was pregnant, and yes its that time already. We will be sad to see her go, and it will be very strange not seeing her around the practice. Who am I going to blame the blonde comments on now! What will be do without our Laura?? She is the queen of ordering here at WH, and we always call her if we have a machinery malfunction. She’s the “Jim’ll fix it” of WH.
She is a great member of the team, always smiling, and a real team player. But, don’t worry she will be back. She has promised us. She will be sad to say goodbye to her favourite patients for a few months, but she will come back bearing baby photos to show you all. Good luck to her and the rest of her family, and have a good rest girl!! You will need it xxx

We spent a lovely, sunny, Sunday helping celebrate our dentist Sen’s wedding this weekend. A few of us travelled to his neck of the woods, to help celebrate their marriage. The venue was amazing, Sen and Suba both looked gorgeous, and the whole event was great. Sen didn’t look too impressed when i stood up during the ceremony to give him a big wave. I just wanted him to know we were there to support him
We all had a lovely day. Nick was deaf in one ear from the music as we were sat right near the speaker, Pauline stole a banana (she claims she was hungry) and I was so busy stuffing my face with the gorgeous food that i spilt it down my dress. Good times!
We want to wish all the best to Sen and Suba for the future. I hope they will be having a fab time on their honeymoon. Im sure he wont be reading my blog while he is sunning himself on a beach somewhere glamourous, so I can admit…………………..I do miss him a bit already. See you soon Sen x

After a very stressful and very long journey, Nick is back from his travels. Nick went to Geneva last Wednesday to take part in a very big, annual convention run by the ITI(International Team for Implantology). Dentists, Surgeons, and Specialists from all over the globe meet at these conventions to learn more from each other in regards to implants and implantology. After the drama of the volcano erupting in Iceland, and all airports being closed, Nick was stranded in Geneva. He managed to hire a car, drive to Paris and then catch a train to Calais. He then had to sit in wait for a place on the ferry in order to get back to the UK. Poor Nick! He hasn’t even got time to recover from the long haul trip as he is back in surgery busy with patients tomorrow. Don’t worry Nick, we will have the coffee and Red Bull on stand by

I popped in to Sarah’s surgery today, to see how one of our lovely young patients was getting on with her fixed braces. She works in the village, and has had her braces on for quite a long time now. I actually had mine fixed around the same time as her, so it was a race to the finish line! She has now had them removed and they look fab!! I cant believe what a difference the braces has made to her smile. It may seem like a marathon when you have fixed braces, but the results at the end of the treatment is well worth it. Having fixed braces is a big commitment, and special care needs to be taken when having them on. Good oral hygiene is so important when wearing braces, and making sure you attend all appointments at your orthodontist is also really important. You get to know your orthodontist well as you will be there every 6-8 weeks. She is so pleased with her straighter smile that she has now decided to have them whitened.
If you are interested in having your teeth straightened with either fixed or removable braces, or you would like to have your teeth whitened then please talk to our team.

One of the benefits of working at a dental practice is that we do get the opportunity to have our teeth fixed, whitened and straightened. Today our receptionist Sarah G and our nurse Sara are continuing treatment with Mark to help straighten their teeth, so I thought I would give you a little progress report on how they are getting on. Both girls are getting married this year, so they want the perfect smile to walk down the eisle with. They have both already whitened their teeth, and now they are both wearing Invisalign braces. Invisalign treatment consists of a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that you change every two weeks. Each aligner is individually manufactured for your teeth, and your teeth only. As you replace each aligner, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position prescribed by your dental practitioner.
Sarah G is having what we call in the trade IPR (inter-proximal reduction) today. With Invisalign, in order to make space for teeth that need to move and rotate, small discs and instruments are used to “shave” minimal amounts of enamel off either sides of certain teeth. This makes very small spaces for the teeth to move to their straighter position. Sara has not long had her Invisalign alighners in (she is on week 3) and her appointment today is to have small attachments added to certain teeth. A white composite material is used to help anchor and pull teeth to a new position. They are bearly noticeable! Both our girls are so pleased with the progress so far. See if you can spot them next time you are in, and have a chat with them about Invisalign.
If you are interested in teeth whitening, straightening, Invisalign or even fixed braces please talk to one of our dental professionals. They will be more than happy to help

As we are all currently being bombarded by talk about the current elections and the “big debate”, as dental professionals we quite often have debates of our own with our patients. The subject being………..fluoride. Unfortunately, like many areas in the country, Berkshire does not have fluoride in the water supply. This can cause many problems for our children, and ourselves. We need small doses in our water, toothpaste and mouthwashes to help combat tooth decay. It has been highlighted recently in the media, that children of this generation suffer severely from premature tooth loss. Obviously sugar, sweets and diet plays a major role in whether children develop tooth decay or not, but with small amounts of fluoride introduced, this could help prevent early decay. Please obtain advice from dental professionals about fluoride and which toothpastes/mouthwashes are best for your children, as too much fluoride can can cause fluorosis (brown mottling of the teeth) and may be harmful in excessive amounts. As a dental nurse, it is sad too see children having fillings at such a young age, and especially telling mum and dad that they need teeth removed. We want to do all we can for them, and ourselves, to help combat tooth decay and tooth loss.
Getting our children into the habit of brushing teeth, avoiding sugary foods and sweets, and visting the dentist is just one of the ways we can educate them. I may not be the next David Cameron and I may not be best candidate for running the country, but I can say that we need to change the way we think about our childrens dental health. We need to stop and think in regards to feeding our children those fizzy pops and bribing them with a packet of sweets.
If you would like any advice about diet, flouride and tooth decay please talk to our dental professionals. We can help

Me and Sarah waved goodbye to one of our favourite patients today, as she is moving away due to work commitments. She has always wanted to act, and as a mature student she did just that! We have watched her flourish into a budding actress. All the girls at WH even went to see her in theatre in her play “Dinner ladies” and she was fab!! It has been lovely treating her, and seeing her at her dental exams. She will be very much missed here at WH. I did tell her that she needs to sign up to Twitter and Facebook so we can “Tweet” her and follow her through her career. We can also find out then, if our fillings are holding out!!
All of us at Woodborough House want to wish her the best of luck for the future, and I am sure we will see her on stage and screen many times to come
