It goes without saying that your body experiences a plethora of changes when pregnant, though you may be surprised to learn that your dental health can represent one of those changes.

One of the main symptoms of pregnancy is vast hormone changes that can influence how your body responds to normal stimuli. Indeed during pregnancy your gums can become more vulnerable to plaque which can cause bleeding and sore inflammation. The most important thing to avoid is having  any invasive procedures on your teeth as certain medications are best avoided during pregnancy. So how best to look after your teeth while you wait for busy post-pregnancy life?

  • It’s an obvious one but clean your teeth twice a day, you may want to use a softer toothbrush if your gums are sensitive, just make sure to be thorough!
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste for an added layer of protection
  • Try to use a mouthwash that doesn’t contain any alcohol
  • If you have morning sickness try to wash your mouth with clean water as vomit can be acidic and therefore detrimental to teeth
  • Let your dentist know you are pregnant, there are a few thing we would advise against having done at the practice whilst you are pregnant and so they can give you great advice on keeping on top of your teeth while you focus on more important things!
