Dentures are a common treatment to replace missing teeth using various tooth and gum coloured materials to replace some or all of your teeth. Dentures typically are made with acrylic resin sometimes in combination with a number of metals for stability and fill in the gaps caused by teeth being missing, allowing for a complete mouth and stopping other teeth from sagging or sinking.
Complete dentures replace the entire arch of teeth (upper and lower) with a replacement denture. These dentures fit snugly over your gum area and jawbone and usually are created via two methods: Conventional and Immediate. The main difference between the two is time. Conventional dentures are made and fitted a short time after your teeth are removed to ensure they fit the way your mouth is shaped, whilst immediate dentures are fitted as soon as your teeth are removed but may need further adjustments once they are fitted.
If you are missing a number of teeth, then partial dentures can be fitted. Unlike complete dentures, these can clip onto existing teeth securely and can be removed and unclipped easily.
Implant Retained Dentures
For a more permanent and secure solution, dental implants can be used along with dentures in order to provide a solid, stable fit for your replacement teeth. Dental implants are titanium posts that are fitted to the jaw bone, allowing crowns, bridges and dentures to be solidly attached to your jawbone. After an initial period, the implant will bed into the jawbone, making them as secure as natural teeth. For more information on dental implants, click here.
