Well its official………Christmas has arrived at Woodborough House! Me and Sara C have got the twinkle lights going (after struggling with a few light bulbs that had blown), the decorations are on the tree, and the fire place is decorated with stockings. We are all feeling very festive at WH.
Although this time of year is always very busy for us all, we hope that you and your loved ones are not forgetting about your 6 monthly visit to the dentist and your trip to the hygienist. I know that the dentist is probably at the bottom of the list around the festive season, but its a great opportunity to get the kids in when they break up from school. Come along and avoid the Christmas hustle and bustle and enjoy a warming cup of cappuccino in our waiting room. We are open all the way up to Christmas so there is no excuses!
If you would like to book an appointment with your dentist or hygienist then please call our reception team or drop us an email. We will be more than willing to help.

Yesterday, me and Sen were pleased to see in our diary that we were getting a visit from our patient that works in the pits at Formula 1. We haven’t seen him since Sarah treated him with new front anterior crowns, so were interested to see how he was getting on. He was in fine form, and the front crowns were still looking fab! In fact, he mentioned to us that he has been receiving many compliments, especially from the ladies, because of his sparkly new teeth. He was in for his routine examination and for a hygiene visit and it was great to catch up on all the gossip about his travels and time spent working with the Formula 1 Team.

We were happy to see one of our regular patients yesterday, as we have officially named him our “star pupil”. This man came to see us as a new patient at the end of 2009. He presented with poor oral hygiene, and sore, swollen, bleeding gums. He told us that, although he knows how to brush his teeth, he has never been shown by a professional how to brush and clean inter-dentally correctly. Sen took the time to discuss with him throughly the most effective way to brush and clean between his teeth. We gave him all the tools, and sent him of to play with them. We have seen the patient a few times since his first appointment, and what an approvement a few months make! His oral hygiene has improved dramatically and his periodontal status has improved. He has got a great routine now and he is sticking by it. His wife even told us, that he keeps floss and interdental brushes in his car! Thats dedictaion. He definitely is our star pupil
If you would like more information about oral hygiene, then please ask to talk to one of our dentists or hygienists. They will be more than happy to discuss things with you.

Pregnant women and nursing mothers are an important target group when it comes to giving them oral health advice and care. Good advice and care during and following pregnancy are important to avoid any permanent gingival damage. As my sister has just recently had a baby, and our very own nurse Laura from the practice is pregnant, I am hot on advice for pregnant patients at the moment. You could call me the pregnancy gum guru!
Pregnant patients should always make time for oral care at a time of the day when sickness is not present. There is always an increase risk of caries and tooth erosion when the patient is suffering from morning sickness. Another tip I gave to my sister, is to use a small headed toothbrush. It helped her from feeling nauseous when brushing her teeth. Pregnancy gingivitis also makes the gums sore and bleed, so I would also say use a soft toothbrush with a gentle cleaning motion. The use of a fluoride toothpaste is beneficial, as this will help prevent decay. Those sugary sweets and chocolates that pregnant women crave are bad news for teeth, so the use of fluoride will help combat decay. One of the most important points to follow, when pregnant, is…………….. don’t forget about us! It is essential that you keep up regular dental check ups and hygiene visits, even when pregnant. There is no excuse! Not only will your dentist be able to keep an eye on those pearly whites and gums, but that can also give you more advice when it comes to looking after your oral health.
If you have any questions then feel free to talk to our dental care professionals. They will be more than happy to help

So its the big night tonight! Who will be winning your votes? I have been talking to all our patients regarding the election, trying to find out who they are voting for, and I am still not sure. I suppose I need to decide by the end of the day. I will be told off by some very passionate patients if I don’t! Can they change the state of the economy? Will they sort out all of our countries problems? I don’t know.
I tell you one thing that has got my vote at the moment (excuse my very cheesy link) is our home bleaching kit. We have had a few patients in recently for their review appointments, after going off with their bleach trays and kits, and the results have been amazing!! Its such a great thing to do to lift yourself, and all our patients just won’t stop smiling because of it. We have even had a few of our more mature patients treating themselves to whitening too, and have been so glad that went ahead with the treatment. Our home whitening kit involves you coming into the surgery so your dentist can check if you will be a good candidate for the whitening (we need to check for crowns and fillings as they will not change colour). You have impressions taken of your upper and lower teeth, these are then sent of to a lab where they make your bespoke bleach trays made, and then 2 weeks later you come and pick them up. Its very easy to do, and the girls here are always a phone call away whenever you need any advice or help. We have all done it. As Sarah said to me when I first started “we must whitening your minging teeth”. Thanks Sarah! Well now I have a nice bright smile
If you are interested in home whitening, then please talk to your dentist or a member of our team.

Today the girls had a lunch and learn session with our Oral B rep’s. We usually have regular sessions with them, in order to keep up to date with the latest and greatest tools and toys supplied by them. Oral B wanted to promote their electric toothbrushes today. Electric toothbrushes are great for patients who want to improve their oral health. They help with removing plaque in hard to reach places, tackle areas interproximally, reduce staining, and give a through clean. they are great for patients with implants, and also fab for cleaning removable retainers (I use mine all the time for that). But an electric toothbrush is no substitute for flossing or seeing your hygienist! If you are interested in investing in an electric toothbrush, or you want to discuss which type would be beneficial to you, talk to our team. I know how daunting it is when you walk in to the chemist or supermarket and you are presented with rows upon rows of toothbrushes, with added extras, bells and whistles. All you want is one that will do the job! Talk to us and we can help

I popped in to Sarah’s surgery today, to see how one of our lovely young patients was getting on with her fixed braces. She works in the village, and has had her braces on for quite a long time now. I actually had mine fixed around the same time as her, so it was a race to the finish line! She has now had them removed and they look fab!! I cant believe what a difference the braces has made to her smile. It may seem like a marathon when you have fixed braces, but the results at the end of the treatment is well worth it. Having fixed braces is a big commitment, and special care needs to be taken when having them on. Good oral hygiene is so important when wearing braces, and making sure you attend all appointments at your orthodontist is also really important. You get to know your orthodontist well as you will be there every 6-8 weeks. She is so pleased with her straighter smile that she has now decided to have them whitened.
If you are interested in having your teeth straightened with either fixed or removable braces, or you would like to have your teeth whitened then please talk to our team.

As we are all currently being bombarded by talk about the current elections and the “big debate”, as dental professionals we quite often have debates of our own with our patients. The subject being………..fluoride. Unfortunately, like many areas in the country, Berkshire does not have fluoride in the water supply. This can cause many problems for our children, and ourselves. We need small doses in our water, toothpaste and mouthwashes to help combat tooth decay. It has been highlighted recently in the media, that children of this generation suffer severely from premature tooth loss. Obviously sugar, sweets and diet plays a major role in whether children develop tooth decay or not, but with small amounts of fluoride introduced, this could help prevent early decay. Please obtain advice from dental professionals about fluoride and which toothpastes/mouthwashes are best for your children, as too much fluoride can can cause fluorosis (brown mottling of the teeth) and may be harmful in excessive amounts. As a dental nurse, it is sad too see children having fillings at such a young age, and especially telling mum and dad that they need teeth removed. We want to do all we can for them, and ourselves, to help combat tooth decay and tooth loss.
Getting our children into the habit of brushing teeth, avoiding sugary foods and sweets, and visting the dentist is just one of the ways we can educate them. I may not be the next David Cameron and I may not be best candidate for running the country, but I can say that we need to change the way we think about our childrens dental health. We need to stop and think in regards to feeding our children those fizzy pops and bribing them with a packet of sweets.
If you would like any advice about diet, flouride and tooth decay please talk to our dental professionals. We can help

Me and Sarah waved goodbye to one of our favourite patients today, as she is moving away due to work commitments. She has always wanted to act, and as a mature student she did just that! We have watched her flourish into a budding actress. All the girls at WH even went to see her in theatre in her play “Dinner ladies” and she was fab!! It has been lovely treating her, and seeing her at her dental exams. She will be very much missed here at WH. I did tell her that she needs to sign up to Twitter and Facebook so we can “Tweet” her and follow her through her career. We can also find out then, if our fillings are holding out!!
All of us at Woodborough House want to wish her the best of luck for the future, and I am sure we will see her on stage and screen many times to come
