A Warm Welcome to Woodborough’s Newest Member.

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013

Lee Butler, the newest member to our Woodborough House team, joined in January 2013. Lee is a clinical technician who is qualified to make and fit dentures. He provides a one-to-one treatment plan and helps you find comfort and get a natural appearance from wearing dentures.

Lee works as part of the Changing Faces Group and has many years of experience with skills that are recognized at a national level, and has been highly commended at prestigious dental awards.

He has a special interest in ‘teeth in a day’, hoping to provide either dentures or fixed bridge work by aid of dental implants. He has begun to work together with Nick to find the best solution for the patients.

Lee has now settled in and has his brand new Lab up and running.

He has been seeing patients for consultations, and one of the benefits of having a lab onsite is that he is able to show patients some of the materials used. This is great, as it really increases their understanding of the procedures, which in turn helps to make those more nervous individuals feel relatively at ease!

I have been working with Lee during his time at Woodborough House so far, and he has been fitting in well! Patients are finding him great to talk to and it’s always nice to come and see someone for you dentures and know they will be made by the same hand. As stated above Lee has a special interest in teeth in a day using denture retaining implants – this is great as they are fixed down and do not move around like some dentures can in the mouth especially when eating and drinking.

It is great working with Lee, as you can give someone a better quality of life when they are fitted with correctly fitting dentures; they can smile again and eat more food, which is something I enjoy doing a lot myself ;D! And to not have to worry that your teeth may fall out mid-conversation, or mid-meal, is a blessing many of us take entirely for granted, but make a world of difference to others’ confidence. The dentures that Lee makes also look very natural – you wouldn’t even know they were dentures, to look at them!

It is great to have yet another very skilled person working onsite; it is a real pleasure to be part of such a great team, especially as I am still only training. Gaining experience every day and working with different people throughout the practice is a great way of learning.

Best wishes,

Lo (Trainee Dental Nurse)

Straumann Computer Guided Implant: See the Success for Yourself.

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

This patient was recommended to see Dr. Nick Fahey by her general dentist.  The patient was referred for a consultation to discuss removing the upper right first premolar and how best to restore the space.

The decision was made to remove the tooth and restore the space with a dental implant. The patient decided at the first consultation that she would also like her upper teeth to have a better appearance.  We contacted her referring dentist about the change in the patients request for treatment and asked if the patient should be referred back to their care for the crown restoration.  It was decided because of the complicated work that the patient requested that the work would be carried out by Nick here at Woodborough House.  The Straumann implants were placed using computer guided surgery.

After prepping the upper teeth and placing temps the patient visited our technician in London to discuss the shade and the final appearance of the teeth.  It was at this stage after speaking with Rob that the patient decided that she was so happy with the upper teeth, even though in temps, that she would also like the lowers to be fully restored.

The final outcome was that the patient had one Straumann computer guided implant placed with 13 crowns on the upper and 14 crowns on the lower.

Both the patient and the Woodborough House team are extremely pleased with the final result. Have a look at the transformation in the images below and we’re sure you’ll understand why.

WHO IS A PERIODONTIST AND WHY DO I NEED ONE?

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

You are likely to have periodontal disease during your lifetime.

It can develop at any age. In fact, periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent diseases of man.

Here, our resident peridontist, Kuljeet Mehta, explains…

More than one in three people over age 30 have a form of periodontal disease that has advanced beyond gingivitis. However, because periodontal disease develops silently and painlessly, the majority of people do not even realize they have it. Knowing the state of your periodontal health is important. So, if you don’t know, ask your dental professional. It’s a good idea to know if you are in good periodontal health because periodontal disease and dental decay are the primary causes of adult tooth loss. But even more importantly, recent research has found a relationship between periodontal infection and more serious health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory disease and pre-term low birth weight babies. As you can see, good periodontal health is a key component of a healthy body. Share this blog post with others you care about to help them learn the importance of periodontal health.

What is periodontal disease?

The word “periodontal” literally means around the tooth. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colourless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed.

In the mildest form of the disease, gingivitis, the gums redden, swell and bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort. Gingivitis is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care.

Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. With time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums. The toxins stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body in essence turns on itself and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. Gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums) that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Often, this destructive process has very mild symptoms. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.

Who is a periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. Periodontists are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease. In addition, they can perform cosmetic periodontal procedures to help you achieve the smile you desire.

Often, dentists refer their patients to a periodontist when periodontal disease is present. However, you don’t need a referral to see a periodontist. In fact, there are occasions when you may choose to go directly to a periodontist or to refer a family member or friend to your own periodontist.

When should I see a periodontist?

If you value your oral as well as overall health, any time is a good time to see a periodontist for a periodontal evaluation. Sometimes the only way to detect periodontal disease is through a periodontal evaluation. A periodontal evaluation may be especially important if you:

?Notice any symptoms of periodontal disease, including:

Gums that bleed easily, such as during brushing or flossing

Red, swollen or tender gums

Gums that have pulled away from the teeth

Persistent bad breath

Pus between the teeth and gums

Loose or separating teeth

A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

? Are thinking of becoming pregnant.

About half of women experience “pregnancy gingivitis.” However, women who have good oral hygiene and have no gingivitis before pregnancy are very unlikely to experience this condition.

?Have a family member with periodontal disease. Research suggests that the bacteria that cause periodontal disease can pass through saliva. This means the common contact of saliva in families puts children and couples at risk for contracting the periodontal disease of another family member.

? Have heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease or osteoporosis. Ongoing research is showing that periodontal disease may be linked to these conditions. The bacteria associated with periodontal disease can travel into the blood stream and pose a threat to other parts of the body. Healthy gums may lead to a healthier body.

? Feel that your teeth are too short or that your smile is too “gummy.” Or, if you are missing one or more of your teeth and are interested in a long-lasting replacement option. are not satisfied with your current tooth replacement option, such as a bridge or dentures, and may be interested in dental implants.

? Have a sore or irritation in your mouth that does not get better within two weeks.

What can I expect the first time I visit a periodontist?

During your first visit, your periodontist will review your complete medical and dental history with you. It’s extremely important for your periodontist to know if you are taking any medications or are being treated for any condition that can affect your periodontal care.

During a periodontal examination, the periodontist will gently place a small measuring instrument called a periodontal probe in the pocket between the teeth and gums to measure pocket depths and help make a diagnosis. Probing depths measuring 1-3mm are usually considered healthy. Four to 5mm may indicate mild periodontitis, 5-6mm suggest moderate periodontitis, and 7mm or greater may indicate severe periodontitis. This helps your periodontist assess the health of your gums.

In addition to probing depth measurements, X-rays may be taken to evaluate the health of the bone supporting the teeth.

Your periodontist will also examine your gums, check to see if there is any gum line recession, assess how your teeth fit together when you bite and check your teeth to see if any are loose.

Seeing a periodontist can help you keep your teeth for a lifetime, restore confidence in your smile and positively impact overall health.

Patient Testimonials Putting Smiles on our Faces.

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Needless to say, receiving patient testimonials is a hugely flattering and appreciated part of our week at Woodborough House. From detailed pages to quick jottings; the fact that our patients have taken the time to convey their gratitude means a massive amount to us all, and being a small part of an individual’s journey is a rewarding honour. In the picture below you can see a testimonial from a patient of Nick’s that had us all smiling, and I’m sure you can understand why.  It says, simply, “I should have done it years ago – Fantastic, Nick – Well done.”

From Humble General Dentist to Advertising Star.

I would like to say it came about due to my head turning good looks and smouldering on screen charm but actually my being on television all started with answering a few simple questions for GSK on some of their dental products via an online questionnaire.

Having used Sensodyne myself, I do believe in the brand and I guess that came through in answering the questions. From there I was asked to send in a photo of myself before being invited to a telephone interview. I guess they liked what they saw and heard, as before I knew it they had asked me to come along to some shoots – a very surreal experience indeed.

You can imagine the scene: make-up artists, camera crew, lighting, directors and me, though unfortunately we weren’t in the personal trailer I had been hoping for. Whilst my hair was being gelled up and foundation put on, my very lovely director was briefing me on proceedings;

‘Sen, we are just going to ask you a few questions and we want you to answer them as openly and as honestly as you can.’

There was no script – they just wanted to hear what I had to say about tooth sensitivity and how Sensodyne toothpaste can help, and a couple of hours later, we were done.

That was over 6months ago. I had told very few people about the shoot and we all soon forgot about it. Then many weeks later I remember I was attending an evening at Woodborough House for a series of lectures given by our specialists, when I got an SMS to say that I was going to be used for the commercial and it would start airing the next day! I kept very quiet about it, but the next day my phone went crazy nonetheless with message after message.

‘OMG! Just saw you on TV’

‘Sen were you on TV?’

‘Can I have your autograph please?’

Some people were even looking around their living rooms thinking I had broken in to talk to them about toothpaste when in fact I was just on the TV!

It was a great experience and a lot of fun. Off the back of that, Peter Jackson did call me up and ask me to be in the second of the Hobbit trilogy but Sarah and Nick said I couldn’t have the time off. Ah well, there is always the third one Peter!!

Interesting Cases – Exceptional Results, Part 3.

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

Nick has finished a very interesting All-On-4 case this week with a very rewarding result for both Nick and the patient. The patient was referred to us due to missing teeth and her general dentist felt that she would benefit from a fixed restoration. The patient had four Straumann implants placed in the upper jaw and four Straumann implants in the lower jaw using 3D guided surgery planning. The final restorations are screw retained fixed. As you can see from the photos below, the transformation is amazing. The patient has now been referred back to her general dentist.

Fantastic!

Interesting Cases – Exceptional Results, Part 2.

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

Nick was referred an eighteen year old girl with missing lateral incisors. Her smile has been restored by placing two Straumann implants with screw retained crowns. Nick will always try to make the final restoration screw retained due to its flexibility – in case the crown ever needs to be removed at a later date. This treatment was provided using 3D guided surgery planning. As you can see from the photos we have had a fantastic result and the patient has left our care very happy with her new smile. The patient has now been referred back to her general dentist. See the images below for the transformation and beautiful results.

Spectacular results, and a beautiful smile to boot.

Woodborough House Study Club – A Wonderful Evening.

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

Have a look at some of the photos from the Perio evening on Monday 18th March.

It was an absolutely brilliant night and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We held the evening at our practice and it was a full house for Dr. Kuljeet Mehta, who delivered a great presentation on Current concepts of periodontal Assessment. It was very interesting, and we know everyone went away with some new knowledge to share.

Thank you, Dr. Mehta, and thanks to all of you who took the time to attend.

What a year 2012 was for Woodborough House!

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

What a year 2012 was for the Woodborough House staff,

Although we work hard, we’ve all had such a laugh,

Congratulations to Sara and Lou,

They became first-time mummies – both bundles were blue!

Speaking of babies, Sen will soon be a Dad,

Look out for him on TV, on the Sensodyne ad!

But that’s not all, oh no, there’s one more,

Dental nurse Laura is expecting baby number 4,

After 26 years our veteran nurse left,

Good luck for the future Hayley; we wish you the best,

And welcome on board the Woodborough House way,

Our new dentist Mehdi, and new nurses Lo and Jay,

Receptionist Leah doesn’t miss a trick,

She organises all the ITI Study Clubs for Nick,

Our Nick is amazing; he takes on new tasks every day;

Last year he was made Chairman of the Reading BDA,

He’s also been the only one asked

(which is very prestigious and grand)

To give talks to dentists from all over Europe

in Basel, Switzerland.

There to make sure things all run fine and dandy,

(He’d be lost without her) is his trusty nurse, Mandy!

Our Accountant Sam has come up with a fantastic recall system;

She’s made lots of procedures much more efficient, with her pearls of wisdom!

David does cooking and running (he’s our Endodontist)

When he’s not training hard to become on the Specialist list,

Another hard-worker – congratulations to Kirsten,

She’s passed the first part of her exam for nursing!

The prize for ‘Best Hostess’ must go to Sarah, it’s true,

For throwing yet another fantastic WH Summer barbeque,

July also saw the Theale Olympic Torch kiss,

Our staff went to see it – it was one not to be missed!

There was much excitement in Woodborough House growing,

As we watched one of our patients win Bronze in the rowing!

We have our very own celeb – cosmetic dentist Mark treats the stars;

When he’s not working in his Harley Street practice, we claim his expertise at ours!

We are lucky enough to have another expert; specialist periodontist Kuljeet,

He is no match for gum disease in all the patients that he treats!

In October we had Chris Barrow’s “Discovery Day”,

He taught us how to improve our work day-to-day,

An improvement made by hygienist L’ren is very exciting,

She attended a course and now does all our tooth whitening,

Our other hygienist Helen is as knowledgeable as can be,

She has been invaluable in helping us get compliant for CQC.

Our Business Manager Karen is great; she does a lot for compliance too,

She loves her Excel spread sheets and a glamorous high-heeled shoe!

Clinical Manager Cathy is our Mummy; she has us smiling throughout the year,

Patients and staff alike would be lost if she wasn’t here!

Responsible for our new patients, she has many strings to her bow;

As Cathy also works as Woodborough House’s T.C.O!

And working closely alongside Cathy, is little old me;

I’m no William Wordsworth, that’s clear for everyone to see!

I do a little bit of admin, and a lot of work on reception,

And am mainly responsible for our online social media blog collection,

And so this poem comes to an end; my personal highlight of the year,

Was our Christmas party, full of food, booze, dancing and festive cheer!

We rounded off 2012 in a theme of 1920’s wonder,

As we turned up in style to Trunkwell House in a champagne-filled stretch hummer!

A massive thank you to Sarah and Nick for everything that you do,

And to the rest of the WH team for working hard the whole year through!

Now the time has come again after Christmas, for WH to open its door,

So let’s get to work guys and see what 2013 has in store!!

Introducing our new ‘CarieScan’ device!

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

We’re excited to announce that we have introduced ‘CarieScan’ to our practice. It is basically a quick and easy way of detecting/measuring decay in a tooth before the need for filling and drilling.
