We were happy to see one of our regular patients yesterday, as we have officially named him our “star pupil”. This man came to see us as a new patient at the end of 2009. He presented with poor oral hygiene, and sore, swollen, bleeding gums. He told us that, although he knows how to brush his teeth, he has never been shown by a professional how to brush and clean inter-dentally correctly. Sen took the time to discuss with him throughly the most effective way to brush and clean between his teeth. We gave him all the tools, and sent him of to play with them. We have seen the patient a few times since his first appointment, and what an approvement a few months make! His oral hygiene has improved dramatically and his periodontal status has improved. He has got a great routine now and he is sticking by it. His wife even told us, that he keeps floss and interdental brushes in his car! Thats dedictaion. He definitely is our star pupil
If you would like more information about oral hygiene, then please ask to talk to one of our dentists or hygienists. They will be more than happy to discuss things with you.

Pregnant women and nursing mothers are an important target group when it comes to giving them oral health advice and care. Good advice and care during and following pregnancy are important to avoid any permanent gingival damage. As my sister has just recently had a baby, and our very own nurse Laura from the practice is pregnant, I am hot on advice for pregnant patients at the moment. You could call me the pregnancy gum guru!
Pregnant patients should always make time for oral care at a time of the day when sickness is not present. There is always an increase risk of caries and tooth erosion when the patient is suffering from morning sickness. Another tip I gave to my sister, is to use a small headed toothbrush. It helped her from feeling nauseous when brushing her teeth. Pregnancy gingivitis also makes the gums sore and bleed, so I would also say use a soft toothbrush with a gentle cleaning motion. The use of a fluoride toothpaste is beneficial, as this will help prevent decay. Those sugary sweets and chocolates that pregnant women crave are bad news for teeth, so the use of fluoride will help combat decay. One of the most important points to follow, when pregnant, is…………….. don’t forget about us! It is essential that you keep up regular dental check ups and hygiene visits, even when pregnant. There is no excuse! Not only will your dentist be able to keep an eye on those pearly whites and gums, but that can also give you more advice when it comes to looking after your oral health.
If you have any questions then feel free to talk to our dental care professionals. They will be more than happy to help

Last night the team at WH hosted an event for our referring dentists as a way of thanking them for sending their patients to us for specific treatments. As we have it all under one roof, dentists from all over the county refer their patients to us. Whether they need to see Lama our Periodontist for gum treatment or surgery, Raquel our Endodontist for complex Root Canal treatment, Caroline for Botox and fillers, or Nick our Prosthodontist for Implants, surgery, crowns, veneers or dentures. We have it all under one roof!
We hosted a James Bond themed night at The Forbury Hotel in Reading, with Martini’s (shaken not stirred) on arrival, food, and the chance to watch a 007 film in their private cinema(popcorn included). It was a great chance to meet up with the dentists, and especially great to put names to faces. The night was great and I hope all enjoyed watching Daniel Craig do his 007 thing. I sure did! We will be holding regular events for our Ivory Club members throughout the year. We love to hear feedback, both positive and negative, regarding our events, and would love to hear any suggestions you may have for the next meeting. Nick and Sarah are also thinking of organising a “study club” for dentists, so i will keep you posted.
The team at Woodborough House would like to thank our colleagues for thinking of us when treating your patients, and thank you for attending our evening. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

One of the big problems, that we quite often see at WH, is patients suffering from decay on root surfaces. We saw one of our lovely patients today, who had this exact problem. The roots of our teeth are more susceptible to decay, as the root surface is much more softer than the enamel covering our teeth. As we age, (and that’s the one thing we all have in common) our gums may start to receed slightly. As the root of the tooth is exposed, plaque and tartar are much more likely to stick to this surface of the tooth. Without regular Hygiene appointments, this plaque and bacteria is hard to remove. Eventually this causes tooth decay. After cleaning the tooth surface, we managed to apply a filling material which releases fluoride. Fluoride is great for our little knashers, and will help reduce the rate of decay in our mouths. He left happy, but only agreed to come back for his dental exam if we agreed to run for his charity. 10k!! We might have to start training for next year.
If you have similar problems, or would like to speak to one of our dentists or hygienist about flouride then please let us know. We want to keep hold of tose pearly whites.

After a football update and gossip, me and Sen continued our hard work deep scaling and root planing one of our patients we have been seeing for several weeks now. He is a smoker, and his oral health was not the best when we first saw him. He was suffering from gum disease, and his cleaning was not as thorough as it could be (mainly because he has never been taught or shown how to clean and floss properly). Sen gave him some tips and hints in regards to flossing, brushing, and interdental cleaning for when he was at home, and after a few weeks we really did see the diffrence. He has been doing a fantastic job at home, and he is now really motivated about keeping his teeth and gums healthy. We look forward to seeing him again for more football chat and progress.
If you have any queries regarding gum disease, or would like to visit one of our hygienists for oral health education, then please contact us at the practice. We want to keep you smiling

Today Lama has been working her perio magic at WH! We have seen several new patients today, referred to us from other dental practices around the Berkshire area. Lama has been reviewing their periodontal status, taking radiographs, and discussing the extent of gum disease in the mouth. Periodontal disease effects the underlieing tissues and bone in the mouth. When plaque is left around the teeth and the gum margin, it releases toxins, which in turn causes gingivitis. If this is left untreated, it will progress to Periodontal disease. The signs of this disease are mobile teeth, bone loss, drifting teeth and eventually loss of teeth. When reviewing her patients Lama measures the pocket depths of the gum each side of the teeth, takes Xrays to examine any bone loss and explains throughly the extent of the disease and how she can treat it. She may be a little lady but she sure knows how to fight that plaque and disease away!
If you have any questions regarding Gingivitis or Periodontal Disease, then speak to one of our dentist. they will be happy to help.

Lama, our in house periodontist is fully booked today treating all her lovely patients. Lama is with us at Woodborough House, every Friday, to help maintain and treat our patients that are suffering from gum disease. Many people are unaware of the signs and symptoms of Periodontal disease, and surprisingly more teeth are lost due to gum disease, than decay. Lama is able to discuss a treatment plan with you, deep scale, apply antibacterial solutions to the gums to help healing, and help with Oral Health education. All of Lama’s patients have been very pleased with the outcome after treatment. The healing and improvement is amazing!
If you have any questions or queries regarding periodontal disease please feel free to ask our team. We want to keep you all smiling!!

Today at the practice it’s all hands on deck!! We are preparing for the village Christmas Evening, and today we are adding some extra sparkle to the practice. We are having twinkle lights put up outside! This is just one of the ways we are spreading a bit of Christmas cheer around Pangbourne.
Another way of adding a little sparkle to our lives, is by visiting our Dental Hygienist. Helen has been extremely busy today cleaning, polishing, and motivating all our patients in Oral Health. Regular visits to the hygienist will help to improve dental health and prevent Periodontal disease, bleeding gums, and dental decay. Just another way that Woodborough House can help to keep you all smiling.

Today has been a very busy day at the practice! Sen and Hayley have had one of their most favourite patients in. She originally came to see us for a dental check up. We then found out from her, that she was suffering with sore gums. After doing a thorough examination we discovered that she had severe gum disease. Sen discussed with her what periodontal disease was and how we can help her. Many people are unaware of what periodontal disease is, and how it may start, so it is essential to have these dental examinations to help prevent such disease starting.
Since then, she has been in a number of times to see us. Under local anaesthetic, we was able to dosome deep scaling. We took radiographs and photographs to help explain to our patient what was happening. We gave her loads of oral health education and goodies such as tepes, floss and corsodyl, and she has been doing a fantastic job!! She really has come a long way since the day we originally saw her!! Woodborough House has kept her smiling.
