Drink more water – your teeth will thank you for it

1. IT WASHES AWAY ANY HARMFUL DEBRIS

We all know that a drink of water in between glasses of wine can help to keep a hangover at bay, but drinking between meals and sugary drinks is beneficial too as it can help to wash away any food debris and sugar left behind. Water helps to dilute any harmful acids in food and drink, minimising the impact they have on our teeth.

2. IT PREVENTS ‘DRY MOUTH’

We often don’t reach for a drink until we have that tell-tale dry mouth, however if you get to that point it means you’re already starting to get dehydrated. A dry, dehydrated mouth is the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive on your teeth, particularly at night. Making sure you stay hydrated helps to prevent this by increasing your body’s supply of saliva, which is one of the ways your mouth neutralises the acid that can damage teeth.

3. IT CAN STRENGTHEN YOUR TEETH

If you live in an area where fluoride is added to the water, drinking plenty is one of the easiest ways to prevent tooth decay. Research has shown that there is significantly less decay in areas where fluoride is added.

Why is water so great? Well it’s sugar-free, acid-free, fat-free, and it’s free-flowing straight from your tap!

Tooth decay and gum disease are caused by bacteria build up, which if left untreated will ultimately lead to tooth loss. Brushing your teeth twice and day and flossing daily will usually be sufficient to remove any plaque build-up, but drinking more water throughout the day is an easy step you can take to stop bacteria from building up in the first place.
