The Dental Diaries: New Year, new daily routine
However, a couple of months into the job, having listened to a lot of ‘teeth chat’ and the odd lunch-time lecture, I’ve come to the conclusion that with the dawn of the new year must come a new dental routine. So I’ve made some resolutions to make 2018 a good year for my moderately pearly whites:
Brush twice a day, everyday
I have always been a frequent tooth-brusher, but I’m a frequent ‘fall asleep on the sofa of an evening’ person too, and if my teeth haven’t been brushed by that point there’s a good chance I’m going to crawl into bed without doing it (don’t judge, please)! So this year I resolve to get the toothbrush out before I get too comfy in front of the TV to save myself from breaking rule no.1 of good tooth maintenance.
Drink more water
We all know the benefits of drinking water generally; it’s good for your skin, energy levels and even weight loss, as well as being great for your teeth (it helps to wash away food debris and keeps saliva levels high), but I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I don’t drink anywhere near enough. This year I’m aiming for 2 litres a day, on top my regular caffeine fix!
Fall in love with flossing
Ok, falling in love with it might be a bit much, but it does feel great once you’ve done it. Plus I’ve been reliably informed by some very knowledgeable dental professionals that flossing daily is one of the best things you can do to look after your teeth.
Never leave the house without chewing gum
I always suspected chewing gum being good for your teeth was a bit of a myth, but apparently not. In fact our principal dentist, Sarah recommends it to patients regularly.
Don’t fear the dentist!
Confession time… although I’ve attended six-monthly check-ups for as long as I can remember, I’ve always dreaded going to the dentist. However, I can honestly say from the first moment I stepped through the doors of Woodborough House I’ve felt so relaxed and at ease, and when you think the first time I came here was for a job interview, that’s really quite something! The team here are so genuinely caring and kind that I know I have absolutely nothing to fear when the time comes for my next appointment.
These are the promises I’ve made my teeth for 2018, and just over a week in it’s so far, so good. I’ve promised myself that if I’m still going strong with them all by the summer I’ll treat myself to a teeth whitening treatment because for me, a little incentive goes a long way.
