The school holidays: a test of patience, diplomacy and administrative prowess

If you work, who is going to look after the kids during the day? If childcare isn’t an issue, there’s the question of how on earth you’re going to keep them entertained without spending the entire six weeks acting as sibling referee. Throw in the #bestsummerever Instagram posts of your fellow school gate mums and dads, and you can be left feeling like you’ve ‘failed’ the holidays before they’ve even begun.

Is it any wonder then that many of us hanker for September and the return of the routine and normality the start of the school year brings? We throw ourselves into back-to-school planning, stocking up on new uniforms, school shoes and stationery… so much stationery. We diligently sew name tags into every item of clothing imaginable; we book in haircuts to make sure the children are looking super-smart in those back-to-school snaps; and we make sure their teeth… actually, what about their teeth?

Before I started working at a dental practice, would it have occurred to me to book in a check-up for the children’s teeth before the start of the school year? Honestly, probably not. I’d never considered it a back-to-school ‘thing’, but actually it’s the perfect time to get an appointment booked in. It’s a good feeling knowing you’re sending your kids back to school with a clean bill of oral health, and the start of the academic year marks a great opportunity to put new dental routines in place. Parents and children alike have renewed enthusiasm for trying new things at the start of the school year – it feels like a clean slate – and so it’s a great time to begin, or reintroduce good habits like brushing twice a day and flossing (their teeth, not the dance, which I suspect you’ve seen plenty of this summer), all of which we can advise you on at your appointment.

So, when you’re writing your back-to-school to-do list this summer, add another line saying, ‘ring dentist’; if nothing else, it’ll get the kids out of the house for an hour or so.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to the practice soon, but in the meantime, have a fantastic summer, chaos and all!
