A day in the life of a nurse

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

As a nurse, we have to put up with a lot of things, but this week I experienced something new. Someone bit my finger!! Yes, yes it was very funny at the time but I definitely don’t want to experience that again. There I was, in the surgery, doing my nurse thing, when Sen asked me to take routine xrays of our new patient. This patient was 78, so I explained thoroughly the process of taking an xray. I described how I would place the xray sensor into his mouth and ask him to bite together when it is the correct position. So, slowly I placed the sensor into his mouth…………………………..then it came!! The big canine tooth, sharp and ready to attack the index finger. Now this tooth was used, many years ago to tear through raw meat! Cavemen would use them to eat their catch of the day! I didn’t study radiograph for this.

We all had a giggle, and the patient was very apologetic. We saw the funny side of it. So, when having dental radiographs, think of the dental professional taking them. A finger is for life…… not just for xrays ;-)

Investment in an Implant

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Phew. Busy day at WH today! Nick and Steph have been in surgery placing a dental implant for one of our dear patients. The patient has had one before, and swears by it! She had to have a tooth extracted, and to replace the space she decided to invest in another implant. The case was a complex one, as Nick had to do a bone graft. With the use of CT Scans and radiographs Nick is able to place the implant in exactly the correct position. It was a busy few hours, but the time flew for our patient as she had some of our oral sedation (and my IPod). We look forward to seeing the end result.

Well I am off now to enjoy the weekend. I will be back next week for more blogging. Hope you aren’t getting bored of my ranting yet. The stories will continue……

Friends and Family welcome

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

All of the dentists at Woodborough House have been busy with new patient exams today. As WH is growing and all the team are making the practice a more relaxed and comfortable place to visit, we have more appointments and time to spend with new, and existing patients. Here at Woodborough House we offer a new patient consultation at a price of £79. This includes a thorough dental examination, soft tissue examination, radiographs and dental advice. The dentists can also provide you with information and advice regarding any of our cosmetic treatments, including tooth whitening, implants and invisible braces. We have extended our opening times, to make booking an appointment easier for you, and we are also running a later evening (until 8pm) the last Thursday of every month. There’s no excuse now!

We pride ourselves in excellent customer care, and we want our existing patients to recommend us to any friends and family who are looking for a new dentist. We will also be rewarding our patients if they do recommend us to anyone. Shout about us, and see what gifts and goodies you may receive! We have already given out bottles of wine, gift vouchers and cinema tickets.

If you have any questions, queries, or would like to book an appointment with one of our dentist then please call out reception team or email us. We also have patient co-ordinators, Cathy and Hayley, that can run speak to you in more detail regarding any particular treatments. This is a free of charge, short consultation, and they will be willing to answer any of your questions regarding treatments and the practice.

Root decay and marathon runs

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

One of the big problems, that we quite often see at WH, is patients suffering from decay on root surfaces. We saw one of our lovely patients today, who had this exact problem. The roots of our teeth are more susceptible to decay, as the root surface is much more softer than the enamel covering our teeth. As we age, (and that’s the one thing we all have in common) our gums may start to receed slightly. As the root of the tooth is exposed, plaque and tartar are much more likely to stick to this surface of the tooth. Without regular Hygiene appointments, this plaque and bacteria is hard to remove. Eventually this causes tooth decay. After cleaning the tooth surface, we managed to apply a filling material which releases fluoride. Fluoride is great for our little knashers, and will help reduce the rate of decay in our mouths. He left happy, but only agreed to come back for his dental exam if we agreed to run for his charity. 10k!! We might have to start training for next year.

If you have similar problems, or would like to speak to one of our dentists or hygienist about flouride then please let us know. We want to keep hold of tose pearly whites.

All the Essentials

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

We are all feeling the pinch at the moment, and fixing our teeth may not be the top of our agenda’s, but here at Woodborough House we want to suggest a way to help make things a little easier. We are running a scheme at the practice called Denplan Essentials. It is the Uk’s leading provider of preventive dental care programmes, and it enables you to pay a monthly fee to cover the cost of your dental examinations, X-rays, Hygiene care and then you receive a 10% discount on any treatment you may need (ie. fillings). It has some great benefits including emergency care if you are abroad, away from home, away on business or on holiday. As part of the Insurance services you will also have access to the 24 hour Denplan emergency helpline, in order to find a practicing Denplan dentist.  Another great advantage of this cover is, by paying an additional £1.95 a month, you can upgrade to Implant Cover. This will cover £2,100 per dental implant fixture following a dental injury and a maximum cover of up to £20,000 per incident! Thats an amazing bargin if you ask me. We have leaflets at reception if you want to read up on it.

Woodborough House are offering our patients a free check up if they sign up on the day of your appointment for Denplan Essentials. If you have any other questions regarding Denplan then ring the practice and ask to speak to our practice manager Hayley or our receptionist Sarah. They know all about it.

Periodontal Magic!!!

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Today Lama has been working her perio magic at WH! We have seen several new patients today, referred to us from other dental practices around the Berkshire area. Lama has been reviewing their periodontal status, taking radiographs, and discussing the extent of gum disease in the mouth. Periodontal disease effects the underlieing tissues and bone in the mouth. When plaque is left around the teeth and the gum margin, it releases toxins, which in turn causes gingivitis. If this is left untreated, it will progress to Periodontal disease. The signs of this disease are mobile teeth, bone loss, drifting teeth and eventually loss of teeth. When reviewing her patients Lama measures the pocket depths of the gum each side of the teeth, takes Xrays to examine any bone loss and explains throughly the extent of the disease and how she can treat it. She may be a little lady but she sure knows how to fight that plaque and disease away!

If you have any questions regarding Gingivitis or Periodontal Disease, then speak to one of our dentist. they will be happy to help.

A familiar face

Friday, February 19th, 2010

If you visit Woodborough House today, you may see a familiar face wondering around the practice. No, it isn’t a ghost of WH past, it is our recently retired practice manager Linda! After leaving the practice, she decided it was time to fix up her teeth. She is investing in some Dental Implants to replace some missing teeth. Dental implants are titanium fixtures that fuse with the jawbone. They replicate the natural root structure of a tooth and provide a fit that is very secure and natural looking. They definitely are the best thing since sliced bread!

She has been to see Nick several times for consultations, radiographs, impression appointments, photos, you name it, and today is the big day! All the girls are ready for her arrival, and all hands are on deck. Linda is also indulging in some of our oral sedation. No dancing on the work tops Linda!! We are all excited about seeing the final resultsof the treatment. I’m sure she will be smiling from ear to ear.

If you are interested in Dental Implants or would like to know what treatment options are available for you, feel free ring our reception team and they will be able to book you an appointment with our patient co-coordinators or a dentist. Alternatively check out our website for information.

Treat them with care

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Another new patient joins the team this morning at WH, and makes us feel like our job is worth doing. She is a full time mum from Upper Basildon, very busy, and told me and Sen that her visit to see us was like “being pampered”. We gave her a dental examination, radiographs, and photos. We discovered that she has a few areas of tooth wear. Many patients may not be aware of this, and can be caused by different things. Bruxism (grinding) is increasingly common. Many people do not realise they are doing it, and can be reduced or solved by using devices such a soft nightguard. Tooth brush abrasion is another cause of generalised tooth wear. Scrubbing those knashers may feel good at the time, but can cause great damge to your tooth enamel! Treat them with care. Speak with your dentist or hygienist about toothbrushing techniques. they are here to help. Acid erosion is another cause. A simple task of brushing teeth after drinking a glass of orange juice can cause erosion.

We want to do all we can to help keep your teeth strong and healthy. If you have any questions about tooth wear, erosion, or bruxism please ask. We want to keep you smiling :-)
